TIPS AND ADVICE FOR MODELS : MODELING TIPS
NEW MODELS
Getting in front of a
camera for the first time (or first few times) can be intimidating. in fact,
even pros still get cases of nervousness. so don't worry, it's natural.
i've worked with a number of first time models before and i have good
understanding of what to expect and how to get the most out of shooting with
someone new. the best advice i can give is don't worry about it. relax. i will
do whatever i can to create the type of environment where you can do just that.
i consider a photo shoot to be a collaborative and creative effort between the
model, the photographer, the make-up artist and rest of the team. i welcome all
exchanges of ideas and i'm always open to experimenting and trying something
new.
many first-time models worry about posing. when it comes to working with new
models, i don't expect the person i'm shooting to have an arsenal of different
poses at their disposal. and i never pressure anyone to perform.
i work with you, with the skills you have and provide as much guidance and
direction as you'd like until we're both happy with the results.
i always have plenty of reference material available at my shoots and you are
more than welcome to bring your own. this includes magazines, posing books,
photos, and anything else that might help you get ideas about looks or poses
that you'd like to try. all of these items are freely available to refer to and
get ideas from while we're shooting. many of the experienced models i work with
will still look at magazines while we're shooting to draw ideas from.
HOW TO BECOME A MODEL
Let’s get this straight...
YOU CAN BECOME A MODEL!!! There is a common misconception about the modeling
business...The misconception being... "You must be super skinny, super tall and
super sexy to become a model".
THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE!!! And it is especially not true, Right Now!!!
If you look at hundreds of different TV commercials, magazine ads, billboards...
you will see that every different look is being used in advertising. The truth
is, that advertisers need to target every different group of people in our
society! And you are a part of our vast society as well!!
Especially now days the variety in models is huge... There is a huge demand for
normal average looking people. Of course there is always work for people who are
naturally... sexy. This is not so much a look, as it is a personality.
There are unlimited opportunities available to every different type of look,
age, race, height and weight! Well, let’s go outside of your normal mode of
thinking. Think outside the box. Think about the models,
actors and other celebrities you look up to and aspire to be like.
Why do you think these people are role models to you and many others? What do
they all have in common?
What all successful people have in common is that they are all Extremely
Confident. They are all Extremely Charismatic. And none of them are afraid to be
themselves.
They are everything that everyone in society wants to be. And that is why they
are successful! And that is what you need to focus on first, in order for you to
become successful as well.
All of the money, fame and the success are the results of these personality
traits. These traits are shared by all of the greatest people in history. And
you can have these traits as well!
When a person has all of these traits they become... Unstoppable!
Their personal energy becomes so attractive that everyone becomes magnetized to
them. They become "Irresistibly Attractive". They have the personality traits
that every human desires. Every human has the desire to let go, be themselves
and feel 100% Confident... And we are attracted to those who demonstrate this.
By being in their presence or seeing them in magazines or on TV, we get to feel
what they are feeling. We get to feel their confidence, joy and fearlessness.
We literally feed off of their energy.
We will listen to a song over and over again, simply because of how it makes us
feel. And we will look at a magazine ad over and over and over again, for the
same reason. We get energized. What you are really doing is connecting with the
model in the picture or the artist singing the song. You are getting to feel how
they feel. It is all about how music, pictures and so on, make us feel. And that
is exactly what modeling is about.
To be a model, YOU need to be the one with the pure confidence and fearlessness.
YOU need to have more confidence than the agents and clients you meet. They need
to want YOU, because of how YOU make them feel.
If your energy does not make them feel better than they already feel, then why
would they want you? You would be making them feel worse than they feel already.
You would be an energy drainer instead of an energizer.
Think about people you know, that you just can't stand to be around. Why do you
think that is? It is because of how they make you feel. They do not make you
feel good. They "drain" your energy.
We all want to be surrounded by people that lift us up. That energizes us! When
you can energize everyone you meet, you are on the quick and easy path to
becoming famous world wide!
And that is the secret to you becoming a model.
MODEL ADVICE
Always try to be rested
before a shoot, especially if a lot of travel is involved. The best shoots are
ones where you feel rested and fresh. Always remember you are not considered a
professional after one or two shoots. It takes a lot of work to get to that
point. Nothing comes easy, most of the time Always present yourself in a very
professional manner whether it be your first or 100th shoot. Keep your portfolio
updated with new looks etc. We all change from time to time, never present
yourself as something that you are not.
Remember there are modeling opportunities for almost everyone. Make sure that
you fit into the one that best suits you and your goals. Marketing today is very
diversified, different looks, shapes, sizes, ages, etc. Be you, and be the best
you can be. You will have times when this business will get you down and that is
ok, if this is what you really want....reach for your goals. Be you, and be the
best you can be. You will have times when this business will get you down and
that is ok, if this is what you really want....reach for your goals.
Confidence. Clients are looking for someone who is self-assured and whom they
think can sell their product. A model must be able to sell herself before she
can sell a product. It is also important to be able to handle the rejection that
every model must face. No model could meet the expectations of every possible
client. It is always best to go into a casting not caring whether or not you get
it. That way it's a pleasant surprise if you get the job but you aren't let down
if you don't get it.
Independence. Because models must sometimes travel away from their Friends and
family for a job, or move to a big city to pursue a full time career, it is
important to have a great deal of independence. You must be comfortable being by
yourself for long periods of time.
Organization. A model must be organized in order to keep track of the different
dates, times and locations of appointments so that she can show up at
appointments and go-sees on time. Stamina. A model is sometimes on her feet all
day in the freezing cold or the hot sun. She must be healthy and in shape to be
able to work all day and still look good. Eating healthy, going for walks/jogs
and working out at a gym three times a week is a must.
Always go prepared : ie...clothing changes that you know will fit you. Don't
always think that he/she will have everything that is needed for the shoot. Get
references as many as you can. That would include other models and/or
assignments that the photographer has had. Check and double check. And be sure
that a legitimate photographer is doing the same with you. Never take anything
for granted.
PREPARE FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT
Eating & Exercise habits
I know you'll be excited and you'll want to be in the best shape for your
session and this is important. But, don't overdo it! Diet and exercise should be
done on a consistent basis and not on a binge just because you have a photo
shoot this weekend.
If you are following an exercise and diet program, just continue as you normally
would up until and on the day of the shoot.
Now, if your diet consists mainly of junk food, bread and sugar, I wouldn't
suggest eating much of this starting a few days before your model shoot. I don't
suggest eating like this anyhow for health reasons.
Always be sensible about your diet and exercise habits and you should be fine
for your upcoming model photo shoot.
Avoid new makeup
No matter what the temptation, stay away from new makeup and skin care products
just before a photo shoot. You could be in for a big, unwanted surprise by
having a reaction to these new experiments. Just stay with what you know works
for you.
Model posing ideas
You should have already been doing this long before but look through some of the
major fashion mags like Vogue, Teen, etc. to look at poses and to get new ideas.
When looking through these magazines, notice how the model is positioned, what
clothing she's wearing, background, and lighting (flat & bright or more artistic
& dark).
Think of ways to improve the pose by changing outfits, expression, etc.
Practice the pose in the mirror until you can make it your own.
This is a terrific way to learn how to pose. For more, go through posing tips.
THE DAY BEFORE PHOTOSHOOT
Step1 If you want to make each photo shoot a success, it’s essential that you
take the right steps to make sure you are prepared and ready to go prior to your
shoot.
Step2
Sleep is a must for all models before a shoot. It goes without saying that the
night before your shoot is crucial to how you perform the next day. Plan for an
early night. No staying up late, no partying and no drinking. Alcohol makes you
dehydrated, which is the last thing you need.
Step3
Set out all of your stuff the night before so you won’t have to rush around that
morning. Make sure you know what outfits you’re going to be wearing and pack
them neatly in a large tote bag. Separate your accessories and shoes into their
own bags as well. Of course if all of this will be supplied at the shoot then
you won’t have to worry about it.
Step4
If there is going to be a makeup artist on set, then arrive with a clean and
well-moisturized face. Stay out of the sun and the tanning salons!
Step5
Nude colored thongs prevent panty lines and can be easily concealed no matter
what color outfit you're wearing. Pack nude colored thong underwear. Also pack a
regular nude colored seamless bra, as well as a strapless. If you aren’t sure
what outfits you’ll be wearing, bring a black, white and nude colored bra. Other
suggestions for underwear to bring: a variety of styles and colors, Strapless,
fullback, bikini pushups, low cut .etc.
Step6
Set all your bags, clothes, accessories, etc. in an easy to see area of your
home or pack them in your car the night before so you won’t forget anything.
Step7
It's important that you have a clear idea of where your shoot is going to be.
Get the driving directions the night before and make sure you have at least one
contact number of someone who will be at the shoot. They will be the person you
call in case you get lost or are running late.
Step8
All facial hair should be tweezed, waxed, or shaven, and excess arm hair should
be waxed. Waiting a few days to shave will get you a closer and smoother shave
for your shoot and can prevent ingrown hairs. To get a clean and close shave for
your shoot (bikini, underarms, legs) don’t shave at all for a day or two. Let
the hairs grow in longer and then shave them either the night before or the next
morning—whichever you prefer. This will allow for a closer and smoother shave.
MEN: If you are starting with an unshaven look, bring your shaving supplies for
your next look. Fingernails should be clean and groomed and not too long. Polish
should be a light color.
ON THE DAY OF THE PHOTO SHOOT
Step9
The morning of shoot , make sure to wake up extra early and allow yourself
plenty of time to get ready and to reach your destination. It’s always better to
be early to your shoot.
Step10
Stay hydrated and energized during your shoot. Pack a bottle of water and a
straw (so you don’t mess up your lipstick) and bring healthy snacks that won’t
get caught in your teeth. Some shoots can be long and you’ll want to keep your
energy level up with snacks in between shooting.
Step11
Be comfy . Unless instructed to do so, you don’t have to show up to your shoot
already dressed. If you plan on getting dressed when you get there, simply wear
pajama bottoms or sweat pants and a button up shirt or other lose fitting top
that won’t ruin your hair or makeup when you take it off.
Step12
Avoid wearing jeans or tight fitting clothing because these can leave
impressions on your skin (you know those pesky lines from the fabric that often
cut into your thighs, stomach, etc?). Such marks and lines are annoying to
Photoshop out of pictures.
Step13
Bring a book so you don't get bored. Sometimes shoots can have some downtime in
between so bring a magazine or book to read to keep yourself busy. Bring your
favorite CD's. Cut out pictures that you like from magazines: the pose, mood,
expression, angle, attitude, energy.
ATTITUDE
Bring an open mind, creativity, and a good attitude. The more you enjoy
yourself… the better your film will be. Leave friends, relatives and pets at
home. Be courteous about the set, borrowed clothes and to the crew
POSING TIPS 1
A major factor in becoming
a success in the modeling industry is by learning to pose properly. if you
happen to be one of the few lucky women who have the instinct to pose naturally
that's great, but if not, read the suggestions below and practice, practice,
practice.
1. Practice different fashion poses before going to photo shoots
When you become a high fashion model, you may be offered a job modeling the
latest in clothing, shoes, hats and other wardrobe accessories from top
designers.
Be prepared for this job offer by practicing poses in front of a full length
mirror with clothing, props and other products that you see advertised in high
fashion magazines and on tv shows.
2. Focus on body posture
Always keep good body posture when posing for photo shoots unless instructed
otherwise by your photographer. to give your abdomen a more toned appearance,
hold your stomach in.
Position your hands where they will fall naturally and keep your fingers
slightly apart. practice different ways of positioning your hands and tilting
your head.
3. Practice facial expressions
Stay relaxed and pay close attention when giving different facial expressions.
when posing, your expressions should be spontaneous.
Make your poses come alive by practicing how to give the "look." learn this by
closing your eyes, imagining a thought, opening your eyes and selling the
thought.
5. Show self confidence with your posing skills
Did you know that beauty is not the only talent clothing designers look for in
fashion models? they want a model that shows self confidence in themselves,
because the confidence will also show in the clothing or product the model is
presenting. your self assurance will shine through when you are posing for the
camera so keep practicing by visiting photographers until you feel very
comfortable under the strobe lights of the studio.
Build your self-confidence by studying and practicing. learn to say "oh well,
there will be another chance" when you are turned down. one day the self
confidence you have obtained will be the major factor in making your dream come
true.
Now, strut your stuff and show the fashion designers just what you have to offer
them with your newfound female fashion model posing techniques.
POSING TIPS 2
Whether you are searching
for a career in fashion modeling or glamour modeling, it is very important for
you to realize that there is more to becoming a model than just standing there
looking beautiful.
One very important factor in becoming a good model is posing, and in order for
you to learn the different poses needed for the type of modeling career you are
seeking it will take practice, practice, practice.
Make your posing look natural
When preparing for your photo shoot, there are numerous steps you can take to
ensure you are comfortable while posing and your photos will look more natural.
Get posing ideas
Before you head to your photo shoot, pick at least ten poses you really like
from fashion or glamour magazines, or poses you’ve learned from previous photo
shoots. take time to practice each pose in front of a mirror until you feel
comfortable and have the confidence of knowing you look great doing these
poses.
Hands and facial expression
Stay relaxed and pay close attention when giving different facial expressions.
when posing, your expressions should be spontaneous. make your poses come alive
by practicing how to give the "look." learn this by closing your eyes, imagining
a thought, opening your eyes and selling the thought. also, focus on what to do
with your hands and pay attention to facial expressions. a pose is virtually
dead and unimaginative without a “look”. you should be able to close your eyes,
imagine a thought, open your eyes and sell that thought. practice this technique
and your photos will come alive.
Become an idea factory
Unless you are shooting for an advertising agency or some other type of special
interest session many
photographers recommend that you bring some of your own posing ideas to the
shoot. in addition to your
ideas, the photographer may have his or her own idea of how the session should
go.
Rapport with your photographer
Always work with a photographer you feel you can trust. this will make
communication between the two of you easier and give you the confidence to
express your own ideas.
Always listen to what the photographer tells you. if you are really
uncomfortable with the pose, let your
photographer know how you feel, in a nice way. remember, he is looking through
the camera lens and might see something you don’t.
If the photographer says she wants something different in the pose, try looking
away from the camera or giving a unique facial expression. this is where your
practice in front of the mirror really pays.
Posture
Always keep good body posture when posing for photo shoots unless instructed
otherwise by your photographer. to give your abdomen a more toned appearance,
hold your stomach in.
Position your hands where they will fall naturally and keep your fingers
slightly apart. practice different ways of positioning your hands and tilting
your head.
When posing you should always keep good posture unless the photographer
instructs you to do otherwise.
hold your stomach in to give your abdomen a more toned appearance. if you have
gained a few pounds stick out your chin a little to avoid the appearance of a
double chin in your photos.
Keep your fingers slightly apart and pointed away from the lens. let your hands
fall naturally into position
whenever possible. remember, you want to be
yourself – on purpose.
Now that you have learned what to do, consider these things you should try to
avoid while posing.
Things to avoid when posing for a photographer
Misplaced body language
Body language and expressions come naturally but the language you are projecting
might not be what your photographer wants in a particular pose. you need to
consciously focus on ways to prevent these habits while posing.
Don’t hold your breath during a pose. stay relaxed and your photos will look as
if you just happened to be
sitting this way when the photographer walked up.
In most pose situations you want your arms, legs, wrists, etc. slightly bent
unless you are directed to do otherwise most people don’t stand or sit with
their arms and legs completely stiff. a good point to remember is, if it will
bend, bend it.
Mona lisa smile?
Another posing tip to remember is that you don’t always have to smile. you
should have a good variety of smiling and serious looks. but, sometimes you will
want to give a large, open-mouthed laugh. if you are supposed to be happy, look
the part!
Your eyes are the windows to your soul
Don’t always look straight into the camera. when you cut your eyes to the left
or right, you create an air of mystery. when you look up and away, you are
annoyed. tilt your chin slightly down and look straight ahead for a sexy look.
About blinking
Beware of the blink! if you have to blink, try to blink between exposures. this
is not always easy,
especially if you are working in a photography studio. some models get into a
habit of anticipating the
strobes and start to close their eyes when the picture is about to be snapped.
Get into the habit of not paying attention to the flash and concentrate wholly
on the pose, your body
language, hand position, etc. and your images will come out as you expect.
Be bold!!
Never be afraid to try out some of your own poses in front of your photographer.
most photographers are glad to hear suggestions from you.
How do you see yourself?
When you look at your final images don’t be critical of yourself. find positive
ways to improve your posing.
discover your strengths and weaknesses and shoot for the stars. i am certain
that tyra banks still works on her appearance and her posing artistry even
though she has achieved a degree of stardom. shouldn’t you?
POSING TIPS 3
It's a common
misconception that naturally beautiful models take naturally beautiful
photographs. The truth is without modeling poses and modeling tips, perfect
photographs are harder than you think.
If you are a professional model, a photographer will most likely guide you
through a variety of model poses throughout the photo shoot. But if you are an
inspiring model and are still working your way up to the top you may have to
control your poses to ensure great headshots and sample modeling photographs.
Live show models, promo models, photographic models, and runway models all rely
on professional model poses to succeed. Whether you aspire to appear in print
magazines or fashion shows and Hollywood movies; if you want to be a model, pay
special attention to this insider guide to modeling poses.
Breathe
Although sometimes concentration enhances a good photograph, obvious
concentration can distract and often ruin a good photograph as well. Do not hold
your breath for a modeling pose; always remember to breathe and appear at ease.
Posture
Bad posture is an unrecognized flaw in many people. However, for models, posture
is a harmful flaw. Always remember to keep your back straight and your shoulders
up. Slouching affects the mood of the photograph and enlarges the appearances of
your stomach. In addition to your back and shoulders, always remember to flex
your stomach muscles. Despite your weight or state of shape, your abdomen will
appear more toned if you flex.
Limbs
Symmetry is officially out in the modeling world. When posing, make sure to
differentiate your arms and legs with asymmetrical poses. If you have one arm
long and straight by your side, make sure the other arm is bent. Whether a big
or small angle, the bend will make the modeling pose look more real, less
artificial. Continue the asymmetry to your legs. If one leg is locked straight,
give the other leg a casual bend.
Camera
Although the camera is the ultimate focal point of a modeling photo shoot, great
models do not look directly into the camera. To enhance the quality of your
photo shoot, look away from the camera with a mix of head and eye poses. Looking
off to the right or left side, or tiling your neck to either side can help you
avoid direct eye contact with the camera. In many cases, your head and neck can
remain stationary in your modeling pose and your eyes can do all the work. Head
and eye positions, coupled with personable facial expressions make for great
model poses.
Sitting Poses
If you are sitting down during your photo shoot don't think it's ok to slack
off. In fact, sitting photo shoots require a lot of extra work. If you are
sitting down or reclining, it's important to put your eight on the back of one
thigh, rather than distributing your weight equally on both thighs. If you roll
one hip up from the ground or surface, shifting your weight will be simple. This
pose results in a slimming effect that you don't want to miss out on.
Smile
If you have a naturally beautiful smile show your pearly whites with pride, just
not every time. If you smile in each modeling pose, modeling agents will notice
your lack of versatility, not your smile. To add variety to your modeling poses,
try switching up your smile with a cute frown, a bratty bout, a friendly laugh,
or even an edgy scowl. Your facial expressions can make or break your modeling
poses. Let your smile show, but make sure to show what else you can do.
In addition to these personalized tips for modeling poses, every model should be
aware of the basics of posing. There are 4 main types of model poses: lifestyle
pose, movement pose, portrait pose, and body pose.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle pose evokes a sense of everyday living with common body movements
and facial expressions. Throughout the day, moments of happiness, love, anger,
and hope arise. To succeed at the lifestyle pose, each model must be able to
recreate these everyday emotions.
Movement
The movement pose captures a specific action, such as running or jumping.
Because this pose is most often used for a marketing photo shoot the model is
used to promote a product. Each model must be able to smile and laugh when using
the products in the photo shoot.
Portrait
This modeling pose emphasizes the face of the model and relies purely on facial
features. The model will be in modest makeup and relaxed hair and should pose
with a casual, genuine smile. Many portrait photographs are close up and
emphasize details of the model's face. If you are scheduled for a portrait photo
shoot, make sure to pay extra attention to your skin and drink at least 8-12
glasses of water a day.
Body
Full-length photographs require body poses. Models are encouraged to shift
weight between hips and make arms and lengths into asymmetrical stances.
Although many body poses do not require specific facial expressions, putting
your entire body into character during full-length poses helps your body find a
natural balance. keep these insider model posing tips in mind during your next
professional model photo shoot to ensure you blow the photographer away. whether
you're a trained expert or an ambitious beginner, all models have the ability to
excel in photo shoots. focus on your posture, attitude, and facial expressions
to succeed beyond your wildest expectations.
MODEL RELEASE
A model release is a written agreement between the model and the photographer where the model has granted the photographer permission to use the photographs commercially and/or for self-promotion. Model releases generally permit the use of the image(s) for all purposes, with exceptions for controversial, sensitive or defamatory uses.
